Progress with the European Society for Paediatric Nephrology (ESPN)/ERA-EDTA Registry for children with established renal failure (ERF)

Established renal failure (ERF) in children and young adults is considered a rare disease. Single country data may be underpowered to show any differences or effects of treatment and therefore cooperation between countries is essential to improve the outcome of children with ERF. Until 2007 data collection on children and young adults on renal replacement therapy (RRT) in Europe was limited to that of the European Renal Association–European Dialysis and Transplant (ERA–EDTA) Registry. Within the [...]

Mentoring for Subspecialty Training Program Directors: An Unrecognized, Unmet Need?

The benefits of mentoring residents have been studied, but there is no research about mentoring new program directors. Program directors’ responsibilities have become increasingly complicated, and they may not be adequately prepared for their role at the time of appointment without the benefit of mentoring that is specific to their new role.To assess whether nephrology subspecialty program directors were specifically mentored and whether they felt prepared for the educational and administrative aspects of this role. [...]

Wastewater Treatment Methods & Disposal

Satisfactory disposal of wastewater, whether by surface, subsurface methods or dilution, is dependent on its treatment prior to disposal.  Adequate treatment is necessary to prevent contamination of receiving waters to a degree which might interfere with their best or intended use, whether it be for water supply, recreation, or any other required purpose. World-first experiment on carbon-capture completes first stage

The critical stage of a world-first experiment, to monitor what might happen if CO2 leaks from an underground storage reservoir, has been successful. Following a complex drilling operation, the injection of CO2  from a shore-based laboratory into shallow marine sediments is allowing scientists to determine whether (and how) such a leak from a CCS sub seabed storage site would adversely affect marine life. The experiment is also enabling the assessment of various ways of monitoring [...]

Boosting marine R&D

China made a large stride in space exploration by successfully conducting a manual docking between a manned spacecraft and an experimental orbiting lab module. The feat, carried out by three Chinese astronauts aboard the Shenzhou 9 spacecraft, took China one step closer to its dream of building a space station by 2020. On the same day, China made another technological breakthrough under the sea, which carried just as much, if not more, significance than the [...]

Precompeitive Efficienies in Drug Discovery and the Sherman Act

Precompetitive collaboration usually takes place between either a public and private institution or within a consortium. For example, the NIH is working to identify systematic bottlenecks in the drug approval process. Specifically, the NIH is working to develop a clinical toxicology biochip that mimics human cells to test new drugs against. Such a biochip is expected to reduce phase II failure, which is characterized by safety but inefficacy and improve target validation. An even more [...]

New gene therapy for smoking kills the pleasure of nicotine

Can’t kick cigarettes? A vaccine may one day help by preventing nicotine from reaching its target in the brain, according to research published this week. Most smoking therapies do a poor job of stopping the habit — 70% to 80% of smokers who use an approved drug therapy to quit relapse. Scientists say this is because the targets of existing therapies are imperfect, only slightly weakening nicotine’s ability to find its target in the brain. [...]
