Biography

Timothy Ravasi, Associate Professor, Division of Biological and  Environmental Sciences & Engineering, Division of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, KAUST. Tim joined KAUST as Associate Professor of Bioengineering and Principal Investigator at the CBRC in August 2009, whilst remaining Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of  California in San Diego. Tim already has more than 55 peer-reviewed publications as well as four book chapters. He has extensive experience in genome assembly, annotation and analysis, and has been involved in several genome-sequencing projects (e.g., human and mouse).  He has discovered and characterized several new protein families in the course of those projects. His group at KAUST is involved in sequencing and annotating sponge-sequence datasets and using computational approaches to identity metabolic pathways that synthesize molecules with potential bioactive properties. He is Permanent Visiting Scientist at the RIKEN Institute (Japan) and has received the 2008 Dolph Adams prize for the most-cited article in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. Nature Biotechnology has also selected Tim’s work on biological machine learning classifiers to figure in the 2010 top 10 major breakthroughs in computational biology. Tim has raised as principal investigator more than $7M in research funds from different sources (e.g., NIH and NSA).
