Biography

Gascia Ouzounian is a musicologist, violinist and sound artist whose work investigates experimental traditions in music and sonic arts after 1950. Gascias work in biotechnological music includes numerous performances with the Biomuse Trio, which she formed with R. Benjamin Knapp and Eric Lyon in 2008. Their project Music For Sleeping & Waking Minds (2010-2012), created in collaboration with R. Luke DuBois, features four performers who sleep for one night while wearing medical-grade EEG sensors. The performers brainwave activity generates an 8-channel audio environment and visual projections that correspond to each performers sleep staging. Audiences are invited to spend the night, and they experience the work in different states of attention that include sleep and dreaming. Gascia is Lecturer in the School of Creative Arts at Queens University Belfast, where she directs the Performance Studies programme. In 2013 she founded www.optophono.com, an interactive music and sound art label
