The horseshoe vortex system is a simple vortex model for an aircraft or lifting body which fits a box-shaped vortex system out from the wing. This is made up of the wing vortex, trailing vortices and starting vortex. The latter is a vortex formed due to changes in the vorticity of the wing vortex, i.e. due to changes in airspeed. The horseshoe vortex system resulting from the interaction between a laminar boundary layer and a round transverse jet was studied over a range of Reynolds numbers and velocity ratios using hydrogen bubble wire visualization in a water channel. The study shows that the horseshoe vortex system can be steady, oscillating, or coalescing, depending on the flow conditions.
