Biography

Professor Andrew Ruys received his PhD 21 years ago in 1992 from the University of NSW, and has three decades of research experience in biomaterials and tissue engineering. He was subsequently awarded an ARC APD Fellowship, a prestigious Sydney University U2000 Research Fellowship, and a prestigious ARC Queen Elizabeth II Senior Research Fellowship before being appointed to his current position of Director of Biomedical Engineering at Sydney University (AMME) in 2003. During this time he has achieved excellence in both education and research in biomedical engineering.

Prof Ruys is a leading international authority in Biomaterials Tissue Engineering and Medical Device research with 183 publications over the last three decades, including 80 Journal Papers, 11 Book Chapters, 6 books edited, 5 patents, and 81 Conference papers. He directs a large multidisciplinary research team in Biomaterials and Medical Devices of about 30 members including 11 postgraduate students, 16 honours thesis students, and 3 research staff, and has strong collaborative links with industry.

Prof Ruys has been awarded $5.3 million in research funding during his career, spread over 30 Research Grants awarded competitively as Chief Investigator. Prof Ruys has successfully supervised 24 postgraduate completions: 18 PhD and 6 MPhil, and over 170 honours thesis projects.

Prof Ruys holds or has held editorial positions in 9 research periodicals and is a referee for 22 international scientific journals including some of the top periodicals in his field such as Biomaterials and Journal of Biomedical Materials Research. He has achieved a number of world firsts in research including: 1) developing a spinal disk prosthesis that mimics the structure of the spinal disk; 2) developed and biologically validated the first fully dense decomposition free fibre reinforced hydroxyapatite bioceramics uniquely combining for the first time the bioactivity of hydroxyapatite with the toughness of bone; 3) discovered the gas exudation mechanism in sintered HAp bioceramics; 4) developed the Impellor-Dry-Blending process for functionally graded materials; 5) developed the core-shell method for the fabrication of homogeneous nanocomposites for orthopaedic applications; 6) the first study of diffusion-porosity correlations in bioceramics for drug delivery; 7) published the seminal paper on silicon doped hydroxyapatite bioceramics for enhanced bioactivity which is now a key paradigm in bioactivity enhancement.
